Women's digital empowerment and their full participation in the information society is a key objective of UN Women and ITU. UN Women has prioritized this within all aspects of its work and the ITU Council at its 2013 session, adopted the ITU Gender Equality and Mainstreaming Policy (GEM). Realizing these goals within the development context presents many opportunities as well as challenges. While the potential is great and there are many examples of progress, there are also gaps and a need for increased attention, visibility, understanding, investment and action.
This annual award seeks to create a platform for advancing women's meaningful engagement with ICTs and their role as decision-makers and producers within this sector. In considering "gender equality mainstreaming" we are looking not only at ICT, government and development actors that are mainstreaming gender equality perspectives within their work, but also ICT and gender advocates that are seeking to "mainstream" gender equality into a larger context.

The ITU-UN Women GEM-TECH Award will demonstrate a commitment to advancing gender equality and women's empowerment through ICTs.Format
Open call to all Stakeholders working in the ICT Landscape. Propose a Nominee
Working in technology can, at times, be an isolating experience for women, especially in Africa. The impact of this can limit women’s professional growth in the sector. Women need mentors, role-models and a network to share their experiences, challenges and skills.
Some Women in Technology clubs exist already, but to date, no-one has attempted to build a pan-African network, allowing us to compare our challenges, learn from other countries and connect across borders to expand our influence.
Women in Tech Africa routinely runs event across Africa including:
• First Pan African Women in Tech virtual conference
• Quarterly meetings in Ghana showcasing successful women in tech in that country including head of Google, head of Microsoft Africa
• Joint Women and Tech and USAID Program on the subject of women and technology, the future of Africa
• Women in Technology sessions in Lagos Nigeria at Africa biggest social media event , social media Lagos
• Training for Women Entrepreneurs on the use on technology for business growth

is CEO and Founder of EDEL Technology Consulting (An IT Consulting and Digital Products Company) and Mandela Fellow for President Obama's Young African Leaders initiative (YALI)
Co Founders
Josiah Eyison(Ghana) is Cofounder of iSpace . He was instrumental in staging the first ever Apps Circus event in Ghana. The event was attended by 120 plus members of the tech community and was hailed as one of best organised tech event in Ghana.
Prior to iSpace Foundation, Josiah served as a Managing Director(Africa) for Learning Without Frontiers where he developed day-to-day communications efforts and executed community outreach strategies to support the organization’s mission.
Mr. Eyison has in the past provided prize funding for three incubators in Ghana, one of these companies was Saya Mobile who were selected to represent Africa at the World Mobile Congress 2012. The other was farmerline, an organization looking at supporting farmers with information about their markets.

Cecilia Dei-Anang, Chair women of Ringier Ghana, the Ghana arm of Ringier, a Swiss company(largest media corporation in Switzerland) which owns online platforms like tisu.com.gh,pulse.com.gh and Allsports.com.gh
Cecilia is also CEO of Imago Connect Limited: a Management & Leadership Training and Development Consultancy that uses the Gestalt approach of Organization Systems Development (OSD) to support individuals and organisations in developing relevant solutions: through leadership/management skills training, awareness creation and mobilisation of energies and systems.
As a Crestcom® International trained facilitator, Cecilia currently supports senior managers, in various industries, from banking to oil & gas companies, in their leadership and management development.
In the past few years there has been a flourishing number of self-organisation amongst African women in technology. Many focus on encouraging women entering the field as coders, IT managers and to establish enterprises that increase women's socio-economic well-being. Projects have also focused on improving self-reliance and livelihoods in rural areas.
In order to identify and learn from other Women in Technology organisations in Africa, Women in Technology Ghana spear headed and run the first Pan African women in tech virtual meet up which brought together over 150 women in technology roles across Africa and was featured in CNN.
The success of this process resulted established a formal Pan-African Network of Women in Technology to organise regular activities to provide effective support to women in technology across the African continent.
Women in Tech Africa’s Vision is three fold
• Creating today’s female leaders and role Models for tomorrow’s Women
• Showing the world what a strong African woman in capable of achieving
• Support African growth through technology
